Second Chance-Happy Tales

This is our favorite page on the website! Dogs in this section have found a happy home with their adoptive families through Second Chance. Once you have adopted a dog through Second Chance Dog Rescue, we would love to post your "Happy Tails" story and pictures here. Please email your stories and pictures to Lisa.

Second Chance Dog Rescue is proud to announce the following adoptions that have taken place since 2004. Most of the dogs that come into Second Chance Dog Rescue were either on their final days or very close to it. Each of the dogs that are taken into the rescue are examined by the vet and provided with all shots, as well as they are neutered or spayed and heartworm tested. The majority of the dogs are often very sick and may also need time to just "feel better". For many of you that adopted from us, our house was just the first step; your home has become your new pet's final step in finding his/her "forever home". Hopefully, as time has gone on, your new friend is settling in and the pain that we once saw in his eyes is turning into the joy of knowing that his forever home is one that is filled with love and security.

To read our happy tails simply click on the first letter of the dog's name to see the happy tails of all the dogs whose name begins with that letter.

Dear Foster Mommy! I've been behaving just like you told me, and being a really good boy! My new Daddy came home early today because his office got flooded out, so I was only home for a couple of hours by myself. And guess what! My daddy gets to stay home with me tomorrow too! We went for a walk to the pond near our house, and we went fishing! And then we sat outside on the deck to enjoy the nice weather and I slept in daddy's lap while he worked on his computer.

I met some new doggy friends tonight when we went to Allie's lacrosse practice! I made friends with a baby bull dog, and she was WAY bigger than me! And I met two Dacschund - a boy and girl. We all played together for awhile, and even though I was the smallest one there, I showed them I could hang with the big dogs! All the mommy's at the park fell in love with me and wanted to take me home, but I told them I already have a special home. The cats are slowly starting to come around, and Mandy is even starting to hang out in the same room with me now, but she just watches me. Crystal is slowly working her way down the steps (they say she's afraid of everything), so I just pretend like I don't see her.

Tell all my friends I miss them, especially Mommy Honey! Love and miss you all! Sammy

Sawyer (Formely Expresso)

Lisa, I have attached a picture of Sawyer that we took a few weeks ago when we went hiking. It was his first hike and he absolutely loved it! As you can see, he has gotten much bigger and he is just over 40 pounds. As he got older, he started looking less like a terrier and more like a shephard, but the vet doesn't think he will get much bigger. He also has one ear that stands up and one that flops over. He is incredibly social, loves everyone meets, and plays with all the other dogs in the neighborhood.

I wanted to say thank you so much for all you have done for us. We feel so lucky to have Sawyer in our lives and happy to know that we rescued him. I am so thankful that I came across your rescue...you are doing such a wonderful thing for these animals.

Sincerely, Jill

Dear Lisa,

Here are some pictures of our little Katie (formerly named Shadow)! She is having a great time running around in the doggy park, and lets us know when its time to go. She is very well behaved and calm most of the time, but she still loves to play and wrestle around. We love her very much, and every day she meets more people that always fall in love with her! Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to adopt such a wonderful dog. I couldn't imagine life with out that silly girl!

Hi Lisa, I hope all is well. We just received your newsletter and I thought that I would send you an update on Scout. We got Scout from Second Chance Dog Rescue about a year and a half ago and we are a very happy little family. He is a pure black Puggle that is a perfect mixture of energy and love. He loves running in the backyard, going for walks/runs, and even going out on the boat in his little life jacket. He is a lot of fun to play with and he is a quick learner as we have taught him some agility tricks like jumping through a hula hoop and doing some obstacles. He loves the attention when he shows off in front of company. A real crowd pleaser is when he jumps into our arms and tucks his feet under so that he can be caught.

He has a good amount of energy but he cuddles just as much. He is a huge lap dog and always has to be touching us. If we are watching TV, Scout goes back and forth with who he wants to lay with. He will push so hard into us to get as close to us as he can that it can push us off the couch or bed. His favorite thing is to lay on this back and get people to rub his belly. He can't get enough of that. If you stop rubbing his belly, he puts his front feet together and kicks in the air to tell you that he wasn't done. It's really cute. We have to admit that he is a little spoiled with his own big basket of toys and all the attention that he gets. We are very happy with him and I just want to thank you for giving us the opportunity to give him the love that he deserves.

Best Regards, Laurie, Dave, and Scout Bell

She's doing great. She's got such a playful personality. She loves to run around and especially loves soccer. I'm still waiting to see how big she's going to get, I looked at some of her older photos and she's already grown a bit. Well, thanks for everything I'll be sure to keep in touch.

Good Morning! I just wanted to go ahead and send you an email before Sing and I head out to Petsmart to get Sing a brush (we forgot yesterday to get him his very own brush). He's doing so great, and he's such a joy to have around. He LOVES playing with his squeaky toy we bought him yesterday, we've discovered. He pounces on that toy like a mini tiger going in for the kill! He loves it! He was such a good boy last night. We kept him crated in our room overnight. Around 1:30 AM he let us know he needed to go out, so Joe took him out. He hasn't had one accident in the house yet! And now that he knows he'll get a treat if he goes potty outside as soon as he goes potty he looks at me expectantly like "Ok mom...where's my treat?" He's been so great. Oh, and the gentleman yesterday that said he's a man's dog....boy he wasn't kidding. Sing loves Joe to death. As soon as Joe sits down in his recliner Sing jumps in his lap! Take care, Chris Lynch

Good afternoon, I just thought I'd send you a quick update on Sing. We received the paperwork you sent - thank you. Sing is doing GREAT. He seems happy and healthy. He's gained some weight, and I've noticed his eyes aren't watery anymore like they were when we first got him. He's such a good little boy. When I get home from work Joe will bring him outside to greet me, and he'll come streaking across the yard and into my arms. He'll just let me hold him and he'll nuzzle up to my neck for a long time before he's ready to get down and do his own thing again! I usually take him to Petsmart or Petco on the weekends. Partially to help keep him well socialized, and partially just because I love taking him places with me! Maybe one day we'll swing up to the Petsmart ya'll are at. He's not getting spoiled rotten or anything *smile*. Take care, Chris Lynch

Hi Lisa, I just wanted to email you with a quick update on Sing. It's been a little over six months since we adopted him, and I don't really remember life without my little BooBerry (as we often call him). He's so sweet and everyone just adores him! We had my Mom baby sit him for a week while my husband and I were out of town, and she fell so in love with him she cried when we picked him up! (Of course I showed her your web site and tried to encourage her to adopt a dog!) What a good boy and such great company! He loves chilling in a lap - if I'm here he's usually in mine, but he'll take any warm body! He loves going for rides and I take him with me often. Oh, and he had his first salon day back in October. He did really good, and looked so handsome with his new haircut and little Halloween bandana! I hadn't realized how long his hair had gotten until we got it cut! Anyway, I hope you're having a lot of luck in finding homes for all the adorable dogs you have. We're sure in love with ours! Take care, Christine

Hi Lisa, Just wanted to update you on Smokey. He seems very happy here and he is doing well. He has gained a lot of weight (but not too much) and I am feeding him some good dog food from a store near Richmond. I did some investigating on the internet and I was amazed at all of the good dog food out there that I had never heard of. I am currently feeding him Innova. His coat looks great. We gave him a bath last week and he loved it. He is such a good dog. He has really calmed down a lot in six months. He is very playful and gets along great with Rocky, although Rocky is too old to play very much. We have taken Smokey to obedience classes. All in all, he is living the good life and is part of our family. Janet Gray

anuary 2006 It has been a year now since we brought Smokey home and he has really become a part of our family. He has calmed down considerably and everyone in the family loves him. He has a great personality and he is just a great big clown. He looks wonderful and has put on some weight and doesn't look thin anymore. Also, he has a playmate now and they both play together really well. She is a medium size (50 lbs.) female dog mixed breed and she and Smokey get along really well. She was a stray that a friend of mine had and couldn't keep and couldn't find a home for her so I took her. She is a nice dog and so far it is working out well. The vet thinks she is about the same age as Smokey. WE named her Abby. We still have Rocky and he is 13 now. Hope everything is well with you. Sincerely, Janet Gray

It took a year and a half but now the cats and Smokey are all friends. The cats come in and don't pay any attention to him now. Smokey is probably the nicest dog that we have ever had. He is three now but still as playful as ever. I tell everyone to get a rescue dog. Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a great new year. Janet

Dear Lisa,

Thank you for letting us adopt Snowy. Your advice was right on! She is the perfect fit for our family. She is sweet, affectionate and lots of fun. My kids ADORE her. As a first time adoptee from a rescue, I was very concerned with how nervous and quiet she seemed to be. Both you and our vet assured us that if we just gave her a chance to settle in, that she would become a great dog. Well, you were both totally correct! Snowy is so sweet, so gentle and just the best dog we could have hoped for! My advice to prospective families who may be reading this is to just talk to Lisa about what you want (or don’t want) in a dog and let her choose the best fit. She really does know her dogs and their personality. We are 100% happy with our new family member!!! (The photo is of my husband petting Snowy on her first camping trip with us!) Not the best picture of Snowy, but we had an awesome time!

Spot (Formerly Sparky)

Hey Lisa

Just thought I would check in. I cannot remember if I told you that I had accepted a job in Waynesboro and am continuing with my nursing classes. Sport is doing very well. He is adapting to his new surroundings. He is also getting more accustomed to the grooming table. I have sent in the paperwork to AKC for an ILP for him, so we can start his obedience career. As soon as I can find my digital camera (I am still unpacking), I will send you some pictures. Also, his last heartworm test was still negative--good news. Hope all is going well with you.

Hello again Lisa,

Summer- Girl is doing great as you can see she is well rested....I'll get some outdoor pictures sent to you as soon as the weather turns better. She was a bit timid when we first brought her home, from the move I suppose, soon after she was acting like a puppy again. I have had several dogs as pets in my life, and I can honestly say she has been the best of them all...Great listener, loves to play fetch, vocal only when seriously provoked, never begs for food while we are eating a meal, really awsome manners this dog has, you all did a great job training her while in your care. Oh, and she is just as nice as could be with our little one, plays well, never bites, and withstands all the kisses and bear hugs she gets. Summer really loves to snuggle and be a part of the family, words can't describe the joy she has brought us....

Chris, Kerstin, & Anika

When we first got Sunny a year ago, she had little legs, little ears, a little snout and she didn’t smile or cuddle. A year and a thousand pictures later, Sunny loves to snuggle, smiles and grew so much that she looks like an imperial walker from Empire Strikes Back. I remember when we first got her she climbed into the back window of the car. She tried to do that a couple weeks ago and she didn’t fit. Sunny Has A brown stripe on her back that goes up like a Mohawk when she sees the neighbor’s cats, it’s really funny to see. Sunny has walked in races, entered fun dog shows including one where she won 4th place in the cutest medium dog contest and has been thrown in my best friends pool a couple times. Plus, she is learning to jump through a hoop! She loves to world watch, chase=2 0squirrels as well as sing at the mail man, and all my friends love her and her big ears. Sunny is a sweet girl and even though she chews my stuffed animals and steals my socks, I’m very happy to have her.

"They really do love each other. Emery was telling Shannie she is the "bestest dog."

First of all I would like to say how awesome Lisa and her crew are. I've never seen more dedication from such a group of people who want to love and care for the little ones they bring into our lives.

I had been thinking about getting another dog after years of losing my Missy. I knew PetSmart was have a big event and on a whim I decided to go just to see what was available out there. I had absolutely no intention of getting anything that weekend. I live in a townhouse and knew I wanted a smaller dog. All the dogs I was seeing were larger dogs until I happened upon Second Chance. I had been playing with another little fellow when I found out applications were on him so I moved on. I'm so happy I did because that is when I found my little guy, Spocky. I played with him for a bit until I had to leave. He didn't leave my mind all night and I found myself going to their website and looking at his picture several times through out the night. I went back the next day and sat, played and watched him for what seemed like hours. The only time I left him was when I decided he was going home with me and I did the application. Lisa was very good in telling me what she knew of his background, how to handle him and what to watch out for because he was a biter. I've had him over 2 years now and he is my total love. He is happy and secure, and even though I still have to watch him around others, he is doing good. He has never bitten me but has bitten and lunged. Over time he has become better. He is the joy of my life. I love coming home to him. He is always waiting at the door for me to come in. He's a little cuddler and stays by me always. He's my little boy.

Like the old adage goes......I don't know who rescued who!!! Thank you Lisa and crew for being in the right place at the right time. You changed 2 lives that weekend!!! Love you guys, Patti and Spocky
