Second Chance-Happy Tales

This is our favorite page on the website! Dogs in this section have found a happy home with their adoptive families through Second Chance. Once you have adopted a dog through Second Chance Dog Rescue, we would love to post your "Happy Tails" story and pictures here. Please email your stories and pictures to Lisa.

Second Chance Dog Rescue is proud to announce the following adoptions that have taken place since 2004. Most of the dogs that come into Second Chance Dog Rescue were either on their final days or very close to it. Each of the dogs that are taken into the rescue are examined by the vet and provided with all shots, as well as they are neutered or spayed and heartworm tested. The majority of the dogs are often very sick and may also need time to just "feel better". For many of you that adopted from us, our house was just the first step; your home has become your new pet's final step in finding his/her "forever home". Hopefully, as time has gone on, your new friend is settling in and the pain that we once saw in his eyes is turning into the joy of knowing that his forever home is one that is filled with love and security.

To read our happy tails simply click on the first letter of the dog's name to see the happy tails of all the dogs whose name begins with that letter.

Lakota

Dear Lisa,

I just wanted to let you know that LaKota is doing wonderful. We have had him a little over a year and a half and could not ask for a better dog. Everyone who meets him comments on what a sweet boy he is. He has become my side kick, always with me as much as he can. He even goes to work with me sometimes. In fact the picture I included is of him laying on my lap, one of his usual spots. He just had a wellness check on Monday and the vet said he is in excellent health except for being a couple pounds overweight. Being a little fat and happy is better than being skinny and unhappy. I assure you, he is extremely spoiled. He has more toys than most kids and is definitely king of the castle. We are truly blessed to have him. Thanks so much.

Layla

Hi Lisa and Jesse,

Well Layla celebrated her 12th birthday this past week. I can't believe that we have been together for 15 months already! Other than the fact that she sleeps a lot, she remains very agile and is very playful every morning. She sure has no problem jumping on and off my (actually her) sofa many times a day and up and down off of the porch when we go for potty breaks. Her only restriction is getting on and off of my bed as it is so high. She sleeps on the bed (right in the middle) and waits to be put up and down. Layla follows me from room to room...sits on my feet when she knows I am going out, and runs in circles when she knows a treat is forthcoming. Layla loves watching "Clifford the Big Red Dog" and "Dora". Other shows she basically ignores. Go figure. I took her for her 1-year check-up last week and Dr. Hunter said "Layla is in excellent shape and looks wonderful for a senior citizen". Layla remains very shy around people she doesn't know but loves other animals, especially Wiggles. If I could socialize her more, I think she wouldn't be so shy, but the steps here are not easy for either one of us, so we just do what we can. Layla may not be the perfect dog but she is the perfect dog for me. Just wanted to let you know.

Blessings, Nancy

Leeloo (Formerly Precious)

11/3/2007

Just a quick update....Honey is now Honey-Lu...all the women in the house want to call her Lucy (cause she's always got some splain'in to do lol) but Travis worries she will be traumatized w/a new name...so we compromised and agreed to Honey-Lu....(I'll probably still call her Lucy...it just fits, I don't know why....) Anywho....here is a pic of Honey-Lu and Rachel before the cut....not too much difference, except her fur is soooooo soft! Enjoy and look for more closer to the holidays!!

Miss Honey-Lu went to the beauty parlor today (Petsmart) and was pampered! Had a bath, haircut, had her nails done and did just marvelous! The gal that groomed her said she was shaking but never nipped, yipped or cried....so she got big treats for doing so well! She did really well in the truck too except somehow between her and Jake they figured out how to roll down the window in the back...YIKES! I thought we were going to have jumpers for a min! lol never thought I'd have to use the lock feature for my dogs, kids maybe, but my dogs? lol Smarter than you think!!

She’s such a character Lisa….you know when we first adopted her I just wasn’t sure things were going to work ….and now…I can’t imagine life without her! She’s become so attached to me and my mother…..when we leave she just whimpers and paces until we get home ….but if we both leave the house….she howls! Saddest sound known to man!! My kids can’t stand it….lol They’ve almost banned us from leaving together! And when I took Jake in to be neutered, she cried the entire day he was gone….and then stayed with him for the next 24 hours…sniffing him and cuddling with him…..what a Mom!! Hehe

Leeloo (Formerly Precious)

Hi Lisa, Just wanted to let you know that Leeloo's doing very well. I graduated college last May and she's been spending the summer with me at my parents' house, enjoying the rural setting and barking her head off at the deer. My mom greatly appreciates having the "grand-dog" around the house. In a few weeks, she'll be coming to San Diego with me to start graduate school and meet her two new dog-friendly housemates. I'm especially excited to take her to the Dog Beach out there! Leeloo's really blossomed from the first few weeks we had her in Baltimore. She's very vocal now, and she demands attention by squeezing under your arm or jumping into your lap. She also has gotten a little spoiled, I'm afraid - the floor isn't good enough for her, she prefers the couch, and she just looks too cute on it for anyone to shoo her away. She still doesn't really like other dogs, unless they're really elderly and sedate. She loooooooves people though, and she actually will hold your hand down with her paws and cover it in dog kisses.

Happy holidays! I hope things are going well for you and Second Chance Rescue. Leeloo is just as adorable and spoiled as ever. My boyfriend Jimmy (same one that came with me to adopt Leeloo all those years ago) and I bought a condo here in San Diego about a year ago, and Leeloo has the whole neighborhood wrapped around her little paw. Every morning on her walk, we have to stop at each neighbor sitting out on their porch so everyone gets a chance to pet her. We've trekked all over Balboa Park (my favorite non-beach scenic walking spot), and people just can't get over what a cutie she is! She's still not entirely comfortable with other rambunctious dogs, but she warms up if she sees them regularly. Her current best friend, other than her - I mean Jimmy's - cat, is an enormous lab/pit mix that lives next door. She jumps up on the couch so the two of them can play face to face! I'll have to see if I can get a picture of that; it's too cute for words. I took her to some obedience classes to help her get used to having other dogs around in a more controlled environment than the dog park, and she was the star of the class. Since she already knows basically every trick I could possibly dream up to teach her, she got to demonstrate all the commands for the rest of the dogs! Next, I'm hoping to get her enrolled in agility classes (she already jumps like a champ; she's so smart!).

Lefty

Hi Lisa,

Wanted to send you some pictures of Lefty at home! She's so smart and has a ton of puppy play in her! She'll wake up only to belly rubs on her bed in the morning (my favorite!) Thanks for everything!

Sincerely, Kim

Lexie

Hi Lisa, Hope all is well with you and 2nd Chance Dog Rescue. We took pictures for Christmas cards today. This is one of may favorites of the dogs, but the Santa Dog Stops Here sign got chopped off so we had to use another for the Christmas cards (we will send you one of those as well). We celebrated Lexie's birthday on December 8. She is a wonderful puppy - full of energy! Looks like she will weigh about 42 lbs. She finally got tall enough so that she cannot easily run under Buddy now - thank goodness for Buddy's sake, as she was really tripping him up.

Lexie LOVES balls. She loves all toys, but balls seem to be a favorite - she likes to toss them at us and then bark if we don't promptly stop what we are doing to play with her. She has brought great joy and much laughter to our household. Buddy will not play with her (he turned 12 on December 12), but we think he likes having her around and would miss her if she were not around. We are constructing the house in Stafford. I told my husband that once we get settled, we may have to get a playmate for Lexie. Merry Christmas.

Lexie is such a sweet girl. We lost our beloved Buddy on Memorial Day. We found out on March 14 that he had hemangiosarcoma in his heart. We tried everything we could think of to help him, but our beautiful boy could not overcome such an aggressive cancer. We are just heartbroken and poor Lexie is lost without him. We are checking into doggie day care for her for right now. We hope to be in the new house by late summer. Hope all is well with you. Julie

Little Bentley

Dear Lisa,

We can't thank you enough for Bentley. He traveled to Florida last month, met my family there (Mom, Dad, brother, nephews), spent time on the lanai (screened porch) and had a wonderful time viewing the squirrels and other wildlife that comes into their yard. He was a most excellent car traveler, lying on his blankee or getting in his bed. He discovered the wonderful magic of drive in windows - pull up, roll down your window and they hand you a bag of food!! Sometimes, Mom gives him a bite of.. yes, we watch his weight. He is a delightful companion on long winter days, sitting in Moms lap and watching court tv. He also accompanies her in long walks in the 'hood. We are traveling back to Florida next week and will remain there about a month. We have purchased a small condo and look forward to spending winters there. Last night he slept with Dad and thought it was just great. We are thankful for him everyday.

Little Blue

Lisa,

Just a quick update. Little Blue is wonderful. She's become very comfortable with her new home and seems to love life here. And, I surely do love her here as well! She's gained a pound or so, is learning better manners and doing a much better job at potty training. She loves to take walks and run in the back yard. And, she's quite the guard dog too. She is extremely attentive and wants nothing other than to be close. Thank you again for all you do. Little Blue is a great little companion and she has captured my heart!

Louie

All is going great. He went to soccer practice, did good after a few min of checking out everybody and trying to chase all the soccer balls.. Walks to bus stop every day and seems to be doing well at letting us know when he needs to go out or play.
